Get Jazzed on Maui !
‘Maui Sara’ Gadarian considers herself a "professional listener".
From 1981 to 1995, Sara and Blackie Gadarian ran Blackie 's Bar in Lahaina, the longest running jazz club in the Pacific. Blackie's Bar was known for presenting quality jazz four evenings a week from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A resident trio, quartet or quintet was the regular band, supplemented by performances by internationally known jazz musicians who would appear with the group, or "sit in".
Sara and Blackie Gadarian sold the property that held Blackie 's Bar and Blackie's Machine Shop in 1995. The property was converted to a gas station and convenience store. Sara and Blackie Gadarian moved the machine shop to a property in downtown Lahaina, and have had their residence there as well. Blackie Gadarian died in July 2013, and Sara Gadarian is carrying on with their enjoyment of jazz music to share with the world.
In 2012 and 2013, Sara and Blackie Gadarian presented special jazz events in Lahaina at night club venues. The bands for these events were the top pick of resident musicians who had worked at Blackie 's in the "old days", plus guest musicians from the mainland.
